Air Tanzania has taken delivery of its first Boeing 737 MAX aircraft making it the first African airline to operate the larger and longer-range model of the fuel-efficient 737 MAX single-aisle jet family.
Named Olduvai Gorge, the brand new Boeing 737 MAX 9 with registration number 5H-TCP, touched down at Julius Nyerere International Airport, Dar es Salaam this afternoon following a delivery flight from Seattle, USA.
With its versatility, fuel efficiency, and higher capacity, the new Boeing 737 MAX 9 will help the East African airline to meet growing travel demand in Africa and India. The aircraft will also allow Air Tanzania to deliver a new travel experience to passengers.
Air Tanzania currently operates flights across Africa and to destinations in Asia with a fleet that includes two Boeing787-8 Dreamliners and one Boeing 767-300 Freighter.
Since its delivery in June 2023, the Boeing 767-300 Freighter has solved critical cargo challenges across Africa while opening opportunities to move business globally. Air Tanzania has an additional Boeing 787-8 on order.
The 737 MAX family delivers enhanced efficiency, improved environmental performance and increased passenger comfort to the single-aisle market. Powered by CFM International LEAP-1B engines and advanced technology winglets, the 737 MAX reduces fuel use and emissions by 20% compared to airplanes it replaces.
Boeing's 2023 Commercial Market Outlook for Africa projects that the continent will need 1,025 airplanes over the next two decades. Overall African air traffic growth is forecast at 7.4%, the third highest among global regions and above the global average growth of 6.1%.
As a leading global aerospace company, Boeing develops, manufactures, and services commercial airplanes, defense products, and space systems for customers in more than 150 countries.
