The devastating impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the global aviation industry is yet to abate even as Cabo Verde Airlines has announced it would suspend flights to Lagos.
The Cabo Verde airline will suspend the Sal-Lagos-Sal route between 16 March and 31 May, 2020. The airline says it will provide full refund to customers who purchased tickets for the cancelled flights.
According to the airline, the suspension became necessary due to low demand following the temporary travel ban imposed by many countries due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.
In addition to suspending flights to China due to the Coronavirus outbreak, African Airlines have also been suspending flights to other parts of the world including Europe.
On Thursday, 12 March, Kenya Airways announced it was suspending flights to Rome and Geneva from 13 March to 30 April, 2020. Air Tanzania also announced a suspension of flights to Mumbai from 13 March - 15 April.
The coronavirus which began to spread from Wuhan, in China, has been ravaging the entire world since January, 2020. As at the time of this report, there were 157,226 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in over 80 countries with 5,843 deaths and 75,940 recoveries. Asia and Europe are the worst hit.
Concerned by the alarming levels of the coronavirus spread, severity and inaction, the World Health Organization (WHO) had on 11 march, 2020 formally declared the COVID-19 outbreak as a pandemic and a global emergency.
In addition to airlines and the aviation industry, the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak has caused disruptions in the MICE sub-sector leading to the postponement of many international events including ITB Berlin, Aviation Festival Asia, AHIC, AviaDev Africa, and FIHA.
