It is purely revolutionary. It is one of its kind. It is a fusion of well curated gastronomy, world-class hospitality and vibrant cultures. It is Southern Sun Ikoyi's Traditional Night. Introduced in August this year, the Southern Sun Traditional Night a new concept of dining which is designed to showcase and promote the culture and local cuisines from different parts of Nigeria while giving guests the opportunity to have maximum fun in a culturally charged atmosphere. Call it 'Ethnic Night' and you would be right. The Southern Sun Ikoyi's Traditional Night kicked off in August with the maiden edition featuring Igbo culture from the South Eastern region of Nigeria. The event had an Igbo theme, from decoration to traditional background music.
To add more colour to the event, all kitchen and service staff all spotted Igbo traditional attire.
Tagged 'Igbo Amaka', guests were treated to traditional Igbo Ogene dance and various Igbo traditional delicacies including the popular Abacha (African salad), Ugba, Pepper Soup, Nkwobi and Isiewu.
Soups on the menu included Ofe Nsala (white soup) Ofe Onugbu, Ofe Oha, Ofe Owerri, Ofe Okazi, Ofe Akwukwo, Ofe Mpoto, Ofe Achara, Ofe Akwu etc. Of course, Fufu, the mother of all 'swallows' was there.
Other traditional Igbo dishes and snacks included Yam, Cocoyam, Corn, Agidi, Awarawa, Ube, (Pear), Colanut, Aki na Ukwa. I'm sure it's been long you ate or even saw some of these foods.
And to make an already good evening even better, there was Ngwo (local palm wine) and other traditional drinks to wash down the delicacies.
Igbos don't joke with Ngwo, it's their own version of champagne, great for every and all occasions In September, the Southern Sun Ikoyi's Traditional Night featured Yoruba culture and cuisine with a beautiful Yoruba theme that colourfully complemented the evening.
Tagged 'Faaji Repete', the Yoruba traditional night was made even more exciting and lively by the popular talking drums and cultural dancers. Of course, it wouldn't be a Yoruba 'thing' without the obligatory talking drums.
As they enjoyed the music, guests were treated to various local Yoruba dalicacies including the popular Amala and Ewedu, Eba, Iyan, Gbegiri, Moin Moin, Ofada Rice, Efo Riro, Banga Soup and many other culinary delights.
On October 13, the Southern Sun Hotel Ikoyi's Ethnic Saturday featured Efik/Ibibio culture and exquisite cuisine. Tagged 'Udia Isong Emana Nnyin', the night provided guests with high doses of excitements and fun. There was no dull moment.
Apart from the assortment of traditional delicacies that delighted guests, the ethnic night was also electrifying, thanks to the Ekombi dancers who thrilled guests with their majestic and gracious dance steps. I even showed them one or two steps.
Looks like the Ekombi Dancers know one or two things about magic.
In addition to the popular Edikan Ikong and Afang soups, there were many other soups including Mkpa Efere, Efere Etidot, Afia Efere, Efere Editan, Efere Atama.
In fact, there were so many soup types that I got confused and ended up sampling 3 of them and they were all very tasty.
Other local delicacies included Usung Ikpong, Ubobok Ukom, Edesi Isip and Ekpang Nkwukwo. When I was a student at the University of Calabar in those beautiful days, Ekpang Nkwukwo was a very popular delicacy among students, although I never got to taste it.
There were so many delicious dishes on the menu, my jaw would have literally dropped if I had attempted to count them. Although I spent about 5 years in Calabar during my undergraduate days, I never knew Efik/Ibibio had such an array of delicious dishes.
Yes, even 'oyibo' loved the Efik/Ibibio Traditional Night
