In a bid to check the growing trend of attacks and violence by air travellers in Nigeria, one of the country’s airlines, Air Peace on Wednesday blacklisted one of its passengers.
The said passenger had on Tuesday, destroyed the airline’s check-in system at the General Aviation Terminal of the Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos.
The blacklisted passenger, it was gathered, destroyed the airline’s computer during the check-in formalities of its Lagos-Abuja flight on Tuesday, claiming that the check-in process was too slow.
In a letter dated May 16 and addressed to the passenger, the airline described his conduct as “unacceptable” and insisted that the passenger’s violent conduct constituted a safety risk to other members of the flying public and its staff.
Confirming the development, the Corporate Communications Manager of the airline, Mr. Chris Iwarah said that Air Peace was compelled to blacklist the passenger in order to ensure the safety of other passengers as well as airport facilities and its staff.
According to Mr Iwarah, the airline’s staff have, in the last few months, been frequently attacked by aggrieved passengers, destroying facilities costing huge sums in the process.
Air Peace said that resorting to violence by unruly passengers often results in flight disruptions, delays, frustrating its resolve to deliver the best flight experience to the flying public.
Air Peace, however, assured that it would continue to regard genuine grievances by air travellers seriously and address them with dispatch.
In April 2017 when some passengers attacked its staff and destroyed its facilities at different airports in the country, the carrier issued a statement warning saying they would no longer tolerate unruly passengers.
