Ghana’s leading carrier, Africa World Airlines, AWA, made history yesterday as it became first airline from Ghana to operate scheduled flights into Abuja, Nigeria reports atqnews.com.
Commanded by AWA's Chief Pilot Captain Kwasi Oteng, the inaugural flight touched down at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja at about 3pm local time and was welcomed by the traditional water canon salute.
The airline had earlier in January indicated that it will increase its offering on its regional and domestic routes scaling-up its operations.
The Accra-based airline, which currently operates regional flights to Lagos, said it is looking to bring in more equipment and increase its offering to the populous West African country.
According to atqnews.com, Captain Samuel Thompson, Chief Operations Officer (COO) of the airline said: “We intend to increase our frequencies to our destinations that are good.
We intend to maintain a regular three or more flight to Lagos a day, increase our frequency to Kumasi and Tamale.”
AWA in December 2013 started servicing the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos and has sustained the service over the past four years to the admiration of patrons. The Accra-Lagos route is also serviced by Arik, Air Peace and Med-view.
In just four years of operating in the aviation industry, leading Ghanaian carrier, Africa World Airline (AWA) has become a darling airline to air travellers in Ghana and Nigerian.
AWA was incorporated on November 15, 2010 as a joint-venture between HNA Group (China), SAS Finance Group (Ghana), China-Africa Development Fund (CAD-Fund, China) and the Social Security and National Insurance (SSNIT).
