More than 30 passengers were injured when Etihad Airways flight EY474 from Abu Dhabi to Jakarta encountered severe and unexpected turbulence, the airline said on Wednesday.
The flight was affected about 45 minutes prior to arrival at Soekarno Hatta International Airport, Etihad said in a statement. It added that the flight landed safely and passengers were met by medical assistance teams as they disembarked the aircraft.
The Airbus A330-200 landed safely and passengers were met by medical assistance teams as they disembarked. Twenty-two were treated for minor injuries by paramedics at the airport. The airline did not reveal the severity of the injuries.
A total of 31 passengers were injured, with 22 being treated by paramedics for minor injuries at the airport. Nine other passengers have been taken to a local hospital.
The turbulence also caused some damage to cabin storage areas, the statement said without giving further detail about the hospitalized passengers.
"We are providing all possible assistance to affected passengers," Etihad said. The airline later said flight EY475 from Jakarta to Abu Dhabi on Wednesday has been cancelled as a result of the incident.
Etihad Airways has sent a support team from its home base in Abu Dhabi, and is assisting passengers scheduled to travel on this flight, by rebooking them on alternate flights or providing hotel accommodation.
